Abstract

This research explores the complex relationship between flood occurrences and river
water quality, highlighting the significant hazards they pose to river ecosystems. It uses
hydrological, ecological, and environmental science perspectives to understand the
long-term effects of floods on aquatic ecosystems and communities reliant on these
water sources. The study's goal is to provide an enhanced awareness of the complex
relationships that exist between floods and river water quality by determined the postflood
situation of Muar River along Jalan Panchor, Johor water quality parameter and
categorise it in accordance with the Malaysian Water Quality Index (WQI) to represent
clean, slightly polluted, and polluted then compared to the pre-flood. Water sample
was taken for five stations along Panchor River'. In order to identify the initial
characteristics of the water and the Water Quality Index (WQI), it was analysed using
the WQI parameter such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen
Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Ammoniacal Nitrogen (AN), and pH
scale. Conducting an experiment allowed for the thorough assessment and
classification of the water quality, which were then compared to the DOE criteria for
Muar River. Results show that overall water quality of Muar River along Jalan Panchor
can be classified as Slightly Polluted or Class III, with WQI values ranging from 51.9
to 76.5. However, on the impact of the flood to the water quality to the river shows an
increased in WQI with 65.01 for pre-flood to 68.51 for post flood. It can be concluded
that which indicate a better water quality index after the flood. This could be due to
the good water circulation, dilution, and mixing.
