Abstract

The construction industry is critical to supporting Malaysia's economic growth. Despite its significance, this business is also classified as the most dangerous owing to its high risk of causing construction accidents when compared to other industries, according to occupational accident data from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH). From 2016 to 2020, the struck by object accident was one of the top three most reported accident categories to DOSH. As a result, investigating the key contributing causes to this disaster and its prevention measures is a primary issue in this study. The study is carried out by gathering cases of fatal accidents caused by being struck by items that occurred around Malaysia specifically in Peninsular Malaysia construction sector from the DOSH database. The contributing variables and preventative practices to struck by objects incidents are computed from real-world examples and created as a questionnaire to be distributed to the respondents, who are only safety employees. The security personnel's perceptions of object-struck incidents were compared to actual cases. According to the questionnaire study, the most major contributing factor to struck by objects incidents is a lack of training, and frequent training is an effective preventive tool. In the examination of real-world instances, the main contributing element to struck-by-object incidents is a lack of a safe operating process with an effective preventative practice, which is equipment inspection. According to Spearman's rank correlation, there is a diversity in the respondents' views of the genuine situations. As a result, the study raises awareness among construction practitioners about the need of reducing the rate of struck-by-object accidents by applying efficient measures to address the hidden cause of accident.
